Origin and history

The Cromlech du Puy de Pauliac is a megalithic monument located in Aubazines, in the department of Corrèze, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is a Neolithic stone circle of about 40 metres in diameter. This circle combines naturally erect rocky blocks with other stones voluntarily planted by man. Originally, a menhir stood in its center, but it is now broken and lying on the ground.

The site was recognized for its archaeological and historical importance, which led to its classification as historical monuments in 1889. This classification reflects the heritage value of the cromlech, although its precise location remains approximate according to some sources. The monument is shared between a private property and a communal property, which can influence its accessibility.

The studies carried out on this cromlech, like those of Pierre Pérol in 1946, underline its interest in the wider context of the megalithic sites of the Corrèze. These works, along with references in works such as La France d'avant la France by Jean Guilaine, help document his history and his role in local neolithic practices. Cromlech thus illustrates the architectural and cultural traditions of the prehistoric communities of the region.
