Cromlechs de Meatse, Meatseko-Biskarra, Iuskadi, Zelaïou or Mendittipia (cad. C 984p): by order of 25 January 1957
Origin and history
Meatse cromlechs, also known as Meatseko-Biskarra, Iuskadi, Zelaïou or Mendittipia, form a megalithic complex located in the town of Itxassou, in the Atlantic Pyrenees. Classified Historic Monument by decree of January 25, 1957, these remains date from the Iron Age and Protohistory. Their availability and preservation make them rare witnesses to the cultural and religious practices of the local populations of that time. Their exact location remains approximate, with a map accuracy considered poor (level 5/10 depending on the sources).
These monuments, owned by the municipality of Itxassou, do not have an explicit tourist vocation (open to the public, rent, or accommodation). Their legal protection underlines their archaeological importance, although available sources, such as Monumentum, do not provide details of their original use or discovery. Their multiple names (Meatse, Iuskadi, etc.) may reflect local traditions or historical toponymic variations.
At the Iron Age, communities in the Atlantic Pyrenees organized their lives around agriculture, livestock and crafts. Cromlechs, often associated with funeral or ceremonial functions, marked the landscape and perhaps structured territories or places of collective memory. Their construction reflects a technical mastery and a social organization capable of mobilizing resources for sustainable projects, although sources do not specify the methods or actors involved in their construction.
