Origin and history
The cross altar of Juvisy-sur-Orge is an emblematic monument located in the municipality of the same name in Île-de-France. Built in the 18th century on the village square, it was designed by architects Jacques V Gabriel and Jacques de La Guépière. Its style reflects the artistic influences of this period, marked by a revival of religious expressions in public space.
In 1824, the cross was moved to its current location, at number 7 of the Grande-Rue. This change of location is part of a dynamic urban development, frequent in the nineteenth century, where religious monuments were often repositioned to adapt to the evolution of villages. Despite this displacement, she retained her symbolic role at the heart of the community.
The altar cross was included in the inventory of historical monuments on 13 April 1933, recognizing its heritage value. However, his story was marked by a disturbing episode in 1936, when it was stolen and found a few months later in the Orge River. This event illustrates the challenges of preserving heritage in the face of malicious acts.
Today, the altar cross remains a tangible testimony to the religious and architectural history of Juvisy-sur-Orge. Its presence in public space recalls the importance of monuments in collective memory, while stressing the efforts necessary for their conservation. The property of the municipality now ensures its protection and valorisation among the inhabitants and visitors.
The precise location of the cross, indicated in databases such as the Merimée database, confirms its anchoring in the urban landscape of Juvisy-sur-Orge. Its official address, Grande-Rue, and its Insee code (91326) clearly link it to the Essonne department and the Île-de-France region, strengthening its local identity.
Finally, the altar cross embodies a shared heritage, where art, history and spirituality intersect. Its inscription as a historical monument and its mention in resources such as Mérimée or Monumentum make it a subject of study for those passionate about architecture and regional history, while remaining a living symbol for the community.
