Fifteenth century cross located in the cemetery (Box A 241): inscription by order of 7 December 1925

Origin and history

The cross of Courcelles-lès-Semur, located in the communal cemetery, dates from the 15th century. This monument, typical of Burgundian medieval religious architecture, was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 7 December 1925. Today it belongs to the commune and bears witness to the local funeral heritage.

The location of this cross, at 6 Street of the Church, is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10) based on available data. Although little documented, this cross illustrates the importance of Christian symbols in Burgundy villages in the Middle Ages, often placed near churches or cemeteries to mark a sacred place.

Burgundy-Franche-Comté, a region to which Courcelles-lès-Semur (the department of the Gold Coast) belongs, was in the 15th century a land of transition between royal and ducal influences. Cemetery crosses, like this one, served as both a spiritual landmark and an identity marker for rural communities, often organized around their parish and agricultural lands.
