Origin and history

The cross located in Gissey-sous-Flavigny, in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, dates from the sixteenth century. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is precisely Church Square, in the heart of the village. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 10 November 1925 underlines its heritage importance and its historical value for the commune.

In the 16th century, such crosses were often erected in villages to mark a place of assembly or a sacred space, such as church squares or crossroads. They also served as reference points for pilgrims or religious processions, reflecting the piety and community organization of the time. In Gissey-sous-Flavigny, as in many rural villages of Burgundy, these monuments played a central role in the social and spiritual life of the inhabitants, often linked to the agricultural activities and religious festivals that were rhythmic the year.
