Crossroads dated 1603 (Box A 28): entry by order of 4 July 1986
Origin and history
The cross of intersection of Rupt-sur-Saône is an emblematic monument located in the commune of the same name, in Haute-Saône. Dated from 1603, it belongs to the 1st quarter of the 17th century, a period marked by a strong religious and symbolic presence in the French countryside. This type of cross often served as a spiritual and geographical landmark for local travellers and inhabitants.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 4 July 1986, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It is located precisely at the 1 Chemin du Couvent des Minimes, a location that could evoke an ancient monastic or religious presence in the region. Its inclusion in the Mérimée base confirms its importance in the local and regional heritage.
Crosses of crossroads, like that of Rupt-sur-Saône, were common in rural areas of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. They played a social and religious role, often marking gathering places or prayer points. Their presence also reflected the community organization around the Christian faith, typical of modern-day rural societies.
