Origin and history
The cross of Saint-Maurice-de-Lignon, also called the Cross of the Tree, is a monumental cross erected in the seventeenth century. It is located at the edge of the village, on the old road between Saint-Maurice and Pont-de-Lignon, in the Haute-Loire department. Its strategic location, on a historic traffic axis, suggests a role both religious and symbolic for travellers and the local community.
The structure of the cross is remarkable by its base in the shape of a slightly truncated wheel, topped by a circular barrel and an imposing capital. The cross, of the ostensor type, has rays between the branches and lanceolate motifs at the ends, a rare arrangement for a cross of crossroads. Christ on the Cross, of Greek tradition, and the glory surrounding the crusillon recall the religious jewels of the Puy, highlighting a local artistic influence.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 23 September 1949, this cross illustrates the religious and architectural heritage of the Haute-Loire. Its style, combining simplicity of materials (gross granit) and richness of motifs, reflects the artistic and devotional practices of the region in the seventeenth century. The property of the cross today belongs to the commune of Saint-Maurice-de-Lignon.
The sources available, notably Jean Chaize's references in Croix du Velay and Haute-Loire (1981), highlight its importance in the landscape of the monumental crosses of the Velay. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments makes it a protected testimony of rural Christian art of modern times.
