Origin and history
The rogation cross of Salives, dated the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, was erected in 1677 according to historical sources. This monument served as a gathering point for processions organized during the rogations, the three days before Ascension. The purpose of these ceremonies was to solicit the divine blessing on crops (fool, harvest, harvest) and animals, reflecting the importance of agriculture in local life.
The structure of the cross is remarkable: a hexagonal barrel rests on a square base, surmounted by a naive ionic capital with stylized volutes. The cross itself, of square section, carries a Christ carved on its avers. The cask is decorated with bas-reliefs representing the instruments of the Passion (pilate's crunch, cock of denial, whip of flogging), illustrating episodes of the Gospels. These artistic details underline its role both religious and educational for the community.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 8 July 2009, the cross belongs today to the municipality of Salives. Its location, near Rue d'Amont, and its conservation status were assessed as poor (note 5/10 for geographic accuracy). The monument bears witness to Burgundy's rural traditions and popular piety in the 17th century, where processions rhythmized the agricultural and spiritual calendar.
Architecturally, the square pedestal with chamfered edges and the capital recall a simplified ionic style, adapted to a local context. The ensemble, though modest, embodies the fusion between sacred art and daily life, characteristic of the small rural monuments of the period. The rogations, still attested practices in some regions, show how these crosses marked the landscape and collective memory.
