Cross of the Brassée (Box A 1585): inscription by order of 16 February 1929

Origin and history

The Cross of the Brassée is a monolithic granite cross located on the old road between Vannes and Nantes, near the Saint Lawrence, in the commune of Séné (Morbihan). With a height exceeding three meters, it represents a remarkable example of a slightly patted Latin cross, typical of Breton religious architecture. Its exact origin remains uncertain, but its style suggests a very ancient dating, probably medieval.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 16 February 1929, this cross bears witness to the Christian heritage and popular practices of the region. According to oral tradition, it served as a meeting point for the young girls of the village, who kissed him in the hope of finding a husband. This ritual reflects beliefs and customs related to sacred monuments in Brittany.

Today the cross belongs to the municipality of Séné and stands at the approximate address of 18 Rue d'Alsace. Its state of conservation and its location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), make it a historical and symbolic element of the local landscape. No information is available on its sponsor or on any major restorations.
