16th century cross: inscription by decree of 13 March 1950

Origin and history

The cross of Lugny-lès-Charolles is a monumental cross erected in the 16th century, located on the Church Square in the municipality of Lugny-lès-Charolles, Saône-et-Loire. This monument, typical of the crossroads or cemetery crosses of the modern era, marks the public and religious space of the village. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, on 13 March 1950, underlines its heritage importance and its architectural or symbolic value for the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.

In the 16th century, monumental crosses often served as spiritual and social landmarks in French countryside. They were generally erected near churches, crossroads or cemeteries, playing a role in community life and religious practices. In Lugny-lès-Charolles, as in other villages of Saône-et-Loire, these crosses also reflected the influence of the Church and local lords, while marking the rural landscape with a lasting sacred presence.

The cross is now owned by the municipality and remains a visible part of the local heritage. Its precise location, "4 Place de l'Église", and its Insee code (71268) confirm its anchoring in the territory of Lugny-les-Charolles. Although the sources do not specify its current state of conservation, its inscription in 1950 guarantees legal protection, thus preserving this 16th century testimony for future generations.
