Origin and history

The Crouzilles mansion, also known as the Grand'Maison, is a former seigneurial residence located in the centre of the village of Crouzilles, in Indre-et-Loire. Dating from the 15th century, even from the beginning of the 16th century, it underwent important restorations in modern times. Only the stair turret, which remained intact, was listed as a historic monument in 1929. This manor house, once the heart of a seigneury, illustrates the medieval civil architecture of the region.

Crouzilles's fief was attested as early as 1213, but it was at the end of the 15th century that it was a châtellenie de l'Île-Bouchard. The current house, built in the second half of the 15th century, consists of a main body and a polygonal staircase turret, characteristic of the period. This turret, hexagonal on the base and square on the floor, houses a staircase with screws and a carved stone representing a bat, a symbol also present in the church of L'Île-Bouchard.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the mansion, then undivided, was sold in batches, resulting in the construction of ancillary buildings that altered its architectural unit. Despite these changes, the turret, with its Gothic portal surmounted by a decorated brace, retains its authenticity. It bears witness to the historic importance of this site, linked to the local nobility and feudal organization of the medieval Touraine.
