Origin and history
Duttlenheim Crucifix is a historical monument located in the Alsatian municipality of Duttlenheim, in the department of Lower Rhine. This crucifix, whose construction dates back to the 1st quarter of the 18th century with elements added or modified in the 19th century, is distinguished by its location at a major road junction, between the national road 420 and the departmental one 147. Its architecture reflects the local Christian traditions of the time, although precise stylistic details are not documented in available sources.
This crucifix, which has been on the inventory of historical monuments since 1937, illustrates the importance of religious symbols in the Alsatian landscape, an area marked by a strong cultural and spiritual identity. Such monuments often served as visual and spiritual landmarks for rural communities, while at the same time attesting to public piety. In Duttlenheim, as in many Alsatian localities, these crucifixes played a central role in daily life, punctuating community movements and gatherings.
Their preservation also reflects the inhabitants' attachment to their historical and religious heritage, despite the political and social upheavals that the region has experienced over the centuries.
