Origin and history
La Croix d'Ardes is a monumental cross located in the Puy-de-Dôme department, in the commune of Ardes, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its detailed sculptures, including a crucifix on the front and a Virgin with the Child on the other side. Under the feet of the Virgin, an angel holds a book, while a knot separating the barrel from the cross illustrates a scene of the Annunciation, with the Virgin listening to an angel kneeling. The 15th century crusillon is decorated with flowers and roses, and is framed by two claws.
The cross was listed as historical monuments by order of 21 October 1925, thus recognizing its heritage value. It is located near the church of Saint-Dizaint d'Ardes, on the Church Square, and belongs to the commune. Its rich iconography, mixing elements of the 15th and 16th centuries, makes it a remarkable example of the religious art of this period in Auvergne.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historical and artistic importance. The cross is also referenced in the Merimée base, and its precise address is 7 Place de l'Église, 63420 Ardes. Although its GPS location is approximate, it remains a central landmark in the village, reflecting the devotion and local craftsmanship of the time.
