Origin and history
The 16th century cross in the Poinson-lès-Fayl Cemetery is an emblematic monument of this commune in the East. Ranked among the Historical Monuments, it bears witness to the rural religious architecture of the Renaissance, a period marked by artistic and cultural renewal after the Middle Ages. Its registration in 1929 underscores its heritage importance, although the details of its construction or its sponsors remain unknown.
At the time of its creation in the 16th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region (now part of the Great East) was mainly oriented towards agriculture and trade in wines and cereals. The cemetery crosses, such as that of Poinson-les-Fayl, played a central role in community life: they marked a sacred place, served as a reference point for processions and recalled the presence of the Church in the daily lives of villagers. Their style often reflected local artistic influences, sometimes mixing late Gothic elements and reborn motifs.
