Cross of road in stone called Cross Vernaie: classification by decree of 23 July 1909

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin en pierre so-called Croix Vernaie is a historic monument located in Autigny-la-Tour, in the Vosges department (88), in the Grand Est region. Dated from the 4th quarter of the 16th century, this cross of paths is a typical example of religious monuments erected along rural roads and roads at that time. It bears witness to popular piety and the Christianization of the countryside during the Renaissance.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 July 1909, the Vernaie Cross is now owned by the municipality of Autigny-la-Tour. Its location, on the road from Autigny to Fuchs, reflects its initial role as a spiritual landmark and protection for local travellers and residents. The road crosses often served as gathering points or prayer points, marking the rural landscape and community life.

The location of the Vernae Cross is estimated with an accuracy considered fair (note 5/10), based on available data. It is referenced in the Mérimée base under the Insee code 88019, confirming its membership in the communal and regional heritage. No additional information is provided on its current state or accessibility to the public.
