Origin and history
La croix de Belpech is a wrought iron cross located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. This monument, whose construction periods extend from the 14th to the 16th century according to the sources, consists of a triangular stone pedestal surmounted by a metallic structure. Its arms, designed to carry candles, are decorated with decorations depicting leaves and cabbages, typical of the local crafts of the time.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 28 May 1907, this cross is installed on the road leading to the Belpech cemetery. Its location, near the oratory (9 Place de l'Oratoire), suggests a role in medieval and modern religious processions or ceremonies. The property of the cross belongs to the commune, although its current access and vocation (visit, worship, or simple heritage element) are not specified in the available sources.
The road crosses, such as Belpech, often served as spiritual or memorial landmarks in Occitan villages. Their presence marked parish boundaries, roads to holy places, or recalled local events. Although the archives do not mention any specific event related to this cross, its early classification (early 20th century) bears witness to its heritage importance in an area rich in medieval remains.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) underline its architectural interest, especially for its work in wrought iron, rare for the crosses of this period in Languedoc. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "passable" (note 5/10), with an approximate address at 9 Place de l'Oratoire, code INSEE 11033. No information is provided on any craftsmen or sponsors of the work.
