Origin and history

The Croix de la Bouquerie, classified as a Historical Monument, stands on the eponymous square in Sarlat-la-Canéda, Dordogne. Its base, typical of the Louis XIV style, rests on two overflowing steps, while the cross itself, more recent, crowns the ensemble. The building was registered by ministerial decree on 23 August 1946, attesting to its heritage value and its anchor in local history.

The monument illustrates 17th century civil religious architecture, a period marked by a post-Renaissance artistic revival in Périgord. Crosses of crossroads or squares, like this one, often served as spiritual and social landmarks, punctuating public spaces. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in daily life, between devotion and affirmation of local power.

The location of the Croix de la Bouquerie in a central square of Sarlat suggests its role in urban structuring. The documents refer to a location accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10), indicating that its current location could correspond to its original site. Owned by the commune, it remains a material testimony of the cultural and religious practices of New Aquitaine under the Old Regime.
