Origin and history

La Croix de Sorgeat is a historical monument located in the municipality of Sorgeat, Ariège, Occitanie. This wrought iron cross, dated from the 18th century, is sealed on a granite base above a terrace in front of the church. This place, where many bones have been discovered, suggests the presence of an ancient cemetery. The cross bears the traditional attributes of crucifixion, including a thorn crown in its centre.

The terrace on which the cross rests serves the church threshold, strengthening its link with the place of worship. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 5 July 1979, this cross belongs to the municipality of Sorgeat. Its location, although documented (address: 5009 La Molle, Sorgeat), is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10). The cross illustrates the local wrought iron crafts and the symbolic role of the crosses in religious and funeral spaces.

Available sources, including Monumentum, indicate that the cross is protected for its heritage interest. No information is provided on its current accessibility (visit, rental, etc.). The Creative Commons license of the associated photo (credit: Jack ma) confirms its status as public and cultural property.
