Cemetery Cross (Cdg. G 165): Registration by Order of 18 April 1973

Origin and history

The Cross of the Louroux Cemetery is a historical monument erected in the 15th century. It consists of an altar-shaped base, topped by a rectangular prismatic base bearing a cross. On this cross, Christ is represented on each side, accompanied by statuettes of the Virgin and Saint John. This type of monument, typical of medieval cemeteries, served both as a religious symbol and a landmark for the faithful.

In 1994, restoration work was undertaken to preserve this heritage. The cross has been listed as a Historical Monument since a decree of 18 April 1973, and belongs to the commune of Le Louroux. Its location, although documented, is estimated with average accuracy (level 6/10). This type of cross was often a gathering place for religious ceremonies and funeral processes.

The monument is part of the wider context of medieval religious art in Touraine, an area marked by a strong presence of buildings and sacred objects. Cemeteries, at that time, were central spaces in village life, where prayers, commemorations and community life were mixed. The cross of Louroux is an emblematic example, reflecting the devotion and local craftsmanship of the 15th century.
