Origin and history

The crypt of Saint Amadour is an integral part of the Religious City of Rocamadour, a Marian pilgrimage site of major importance since the Middle Ages. It is located under the Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, a former collegiate church erected as a minor basilica in 1913. The crypt, dated the twelfth century, housed the relics of Saint Amadour, whose intact body would have been discovered in 1166, triggering the construction of the religious ensemble. This pilgrimage, mentioned as early as 1105 in a bubble of Pope Pascal II, attracted faithful until the French Revolution.

The crypt was significantly restored from the 19th century, particularly during the first campaign led by Abbé Chevalt between 1858 and 1860. These works were designed to save the building, then in a state of advanced disrepair, with overloaded vaults and distorted walls. The basilica and crypt were classified as historical monuments in 2000, consolidating their preservation. The Romano-ogival style crypt is distinguished by its quadripartite vault supported by a double arch, typical of the transition between Roman and Gothic art.

In the 19th century, arrangements such as a wooden mezzanine were added to accommodate pilgrims, while in 2016, the relics of Saint Amadour were resettled in the apse. The crypt remains an architectural and spiritual testimony of the medieval influence of Rocamadour, linked to the Marian devotion and the legendary figure of Saint Amadour, hermit and mythical founder of the sanctuary.
