Origin and history
The hypogees of Villevenard form a set of three tomb caves dug in the basement of the commune, in the department of Marne. These funerary monuments, dated from the recent Neolithic and Chalcolithic, bear witness to the collective burial practices of that time. Their discovery and study helped to better understand funeral rituals of local prehistoric societies.
Ranked historic monuments by order of 14 May 1926, these hypogees were searched by archaeologists such as Joseph de Baye and Augustin Roland. Some of the objects discovered during the excavations are now on display at the Champagne Wine Museum and Regional Archaeology in Épernay, as well as at the Saint-Remi Museum in Reims. These artifacts provide valuable insight into the material culture of the populations of this period.
The site is located at approximately 31 La Vigne l'Abesse in Villevenard, and its location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10). Owned by the commune, these tomb caves remain a rare testimony and protected from the prehistoric funeral heritage of the Grand East region.
