Origin and history

The Darcy Garden, the first public green space in Dijon, was created in 1880 by architect Felix Vionnois in a neo-Renaissance style, overlooking an underground water reservoir designed in 1838. This 4000 m2 park includes terraces, fountains, statues and a rich vegetation, with a central bust paying tribute to engineer Henry Darcy, pioneer of Dijonnaise water supply. The polar bear of the entrance, a reproduction of a work by François Pompon, became an emblematic symbol.

The Darcy Reservoir, a major work of the hydraulician Henry Darcy (1803-1858), was built in 1838 to supply 142 fountains of the city via a 12 km aqueduct connected to the Rosoir spring. With a capacity of 2300 m3, it allowed Dijon to become one of the first French cities with running water, significantly improving sanitary conditions. Today, it is used to store drainage water for watering urban green spaces.

Ranked historic monument in 2015, the ensemble also includes the fountain of Youth carved by Max Blondat. The park also houses a memorial dedicated to Darcy, mentioning his collaborators such as Abbé Audra, Mayor Victor Dumay and Prefect Achille Chaper. A scene from the film The Second Truth (1966) was shot, illustrating its cultural anchor.

The garden architecture mixes balustrades, ponds and waterfalls, reflecting Italian influence. The statue of the polar bear, created in 1937 by Henry Martinet, reproduces Pompon's original work exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay. This park, located in Darcy Square, remains a place of relaxation and heritage, reflecting the technical and artistic innovation of the 19th century Burgundy.
