Origin and history

The Cave du Lion, located in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire, is a former cellar dating from the first half of the 13th century. This historic monument is distinguished by its vast square room divided into four arched bays of Plantagenet style, supported by a central pillar. One of the vaults partially disappeared, and a span was modified in height by a subsequent building belonging to a neighbour. Its exact origin remains uncertain, although it is assumed to be linked to the Gué-Lian command office, a nearby hospital or military institution.

Classified as a Historic Monument since 2002, the cellar is now owned by Fresnay-sur-Sarthe. It is characterized by its rare medieval civil architecture, typical of the utility buildings of the time. The dogive vaults, a key element of the Plantagenet Gothic style, bear witness to English architectural influence in Anjou and Maine during the 13th century. The monument is accessible by free visit or guided on request, offering an overview of medieval construction and storage techniques.

The location of the Lion Cave, between the Lion Street and Thiers Square, reflects its integration into the historic urban fabric of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe. Although its geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10), its official address and registration in the general heritage inventory (Mérimée base) make it a documented site. Available sources, such as Monumentum, highlight its heritage interest despite the transformations experienced over the centuries.
