Origin and history

La Demeure Hugon, also known as Maison de bois, is an emblematic building of Bourg-en-Bresse, in the department of Ain. Built in 1496, it is distinguished by its wooden structure, typical of the civil architecture of the late Middle Ages. Located at the intersection of Gambetta and Victor-Basch streets, it embodies the local historical heritage and bears witness to the construction techniques of the time.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 15 March 1940, this house is a rare example of wood architecture preserved in France. Its ranking reflects its heritage importance and its role in the urban history of Bourg-en-Bresse. Although the available sources do not specify its initial use, its conservation status and location make it a point of interest for visitors and historians.

The Bresse region, in which Bourg-en-Bresse is located, was at the end of the 15th century a dynamic area, marked by trade and intense artisanal life. Wooden houses, such as the Hugon House, often served as houses for merchants or artisans, while sometimes sheltering professional activities on the ground floor. These buildings reflected the region's relative prosperity and integration into the economic networks of the time.
