Origin and history

The memorial to the three Pyrenean Marshals Foch, Joffre and Gallieni is erected in Saint-Gaudens, Haute-Garonne, Occitanie. It is located in the centre of the esplanade of Liberation, near the monument to the dead of the city. The latter, directed by sculptor Paul Ducuing and the Barbedienne fondeur, represents a bronze hairy on a pedestal, accompanied by a female allegory honoring a fallen soldier. The names of the soldiers of Saint-Gaudens who died during the conflicts of the 20th century are engraved there.

The Three Marshal Monument pays tribute to Ferdinand Foch, Joseph Joffre and Joseph Gallieni, major military figures of the First World War. It is the work of sculptors Georges Guiraud and Firmin Michelet, as well as architect André Lencaigne. Ranked as historic monuments on October 18, 2018, it is part of a set of 42 protected monuments in Occitanie for their heritage value. Its exact location is the boulevard Jean-Bepmale, in the heart of the city.

The construction of the monument is part of a post-First World War commemoration, where the French communes erected tributes to soldiers and military leaders. Saint-Gaudens, a medium-sized town in Haute-Garonne, participated in this national collective memory movement. The nearby monument to the dead, with its engraved plates and symbolic statues, illustrates this desire to perpetuate the memory of the sacrifices made during the twentieth century.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, specify that the three Marshals monument has been inscribed for its artistic and historical value. Its protection extends to the entire structure, including bronze and stone elements. The city of Saint-Gaudens now owns it, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
