Origin and history
The monument to the dead of Casteljaloux, located in Place Jean-Jaurès in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, was created in 1922 by sculptor Daniel-Joseph Bacqué, native of Vianne. This monument is distinguished by its representation of a Poilu, an iconic soldier of the First World War, standing before a tank, surrounded by two pillars engraved with the names of the victims. It is part of the tributes paid to the soldiers who died for France after the conflict.
The monument, including the landmarks, garden and surrounding trees, was listed as historic monuments on October 21, 2014. This protection recognizes its heritage and artistic value, as well as its importance in local collective memory. The choice of a Poilu on a tank reflects the evolution of military techniques during the war, while honoring the sacrifice of the soldiers of Casteljaloux.
The work is the property of the commune and is part of a larger memorial complex, typical of monuments to the dead erected in France after 1918. These monuments, often placed in central public places such as squares, served both as a place of recollection and a symbol of the resilience of local communities to the loss of life during the war.
