Origin and history
The monument to the dead of Saint-Maurin, located Grande rue next to Saint-Martin Church, was carved in 1924 by Jean Descomps. Made of stone, it represents a young peasant standing, holding a sickle, collecting in front of his son's helmet dead for France. This monument symbolizes the mourning and recollection of the local population after the First World War.
The monument was listed as historic monuments on October 21, 2014. It is fully protected, including its square and surrounding fence. This monument is the property of the commune of Saint-Maurin, in the Lot-et-Garonne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
The sculpture, commissioned in a post-First World War context, reflects the impact of the conflict on rural communities. Monuments to the dead of that time were often designed to honour fallen soldiers and serve as a place of collective memory. In Saint-Maurin, as in many French communes, this monument embodies the pain of families and gratitude for the sacrifices made.
