Origin and history
The Musée départemental de la Révolution française was founded in 1983 by the Isère Department as part of the preparations for the bicentenary of 1789. Located in the domain of the Château de Lesdiguières in Vizille, he devotes himself to studying cultural and artistic transformations in Europe, from Enlightenment to Romanticism. His collections cover a wide range of disciplines, from fine arts (paintings, sculptures, prints) to historical objects (arms, uniforms, textiles), to documentary holdings (photographs, scores, ancient works).
The museum takes an original approach by focusing on artistic creation and revolutionary heritages, while questioning the posterity of this major event. It gathers works and artifacts dating from the revolutionary period, but also pieces inspired by its myth until today. This dual perspective allows us to address both the historical realities and the symbolic representations of the Revolution.
The site itself, a 17th century castle, adds a heritage dimension to the museum project. The Vizille estate, classified as a Historical Monument, offers a remarkable architectural setting to house these collections. The museum also benefits from the label Musée de France, stressing its importance in the national cultural landscape. Its official address, 17 Rue de la Grand'Vigne in Vizille, places it in a preserved historical and landscaped environment.
The topics covered include local and regional history, military history, as well as broader areas such as music (instruments, scores) or performing arts (theatre, cinema). This diversity reflects the museum's ambition: to offer a multidisciplinary vision of the French Revolution, by crossing artistic, political and social perspectives.
Finally, the museum is part of a territory marked by revolutionary heritage, with Isère playing a role in the upheavals of the late eighteenth century. Its location in Vizille, near Cholonge, reinforces this link with regional history, while attracting an audience interested in this pivotal period of European history.
