Heritage classified

The south-east turret and the remains of the wall of enclosure are of the monastic barn of Galinières, in total, as delimited in red on the plan annexed to the decree, appearing in the cadastre section AM on plots 274 and 275: inscription by decree of 10 June 2024

Origin and history

The southeast turret and the vestiges of the eastern wall of the monastic barn of Galinières are a preserved architectural element of a larger ensemble. Located in Pierrefiche, in Aveyron, this monument is associated with an old monastic barn, also called the castle of Galinières, as well as a neighbouring bridge over the Serre stream. These remains illustrate the importance of agricultural and defensive infrastructure linked to religious communities in the Middle Ages.

The site was partially protected by a registration order in June 2024, specifically covering the turret and the walls of the enclosures delimited on the cadastral plots AM 274 and 275. Although the exact location is approximate (precision noted as "passible"), these remains provide an overview of the spatial and economic organization of monastic barns, often located on the outskirts of cultivated land.

Monastic barns, like that of Galinières, played a central role in the management of agricultural estates in abbeys. They served as storage sites, crop processing sites, and sometimes as defence points for surrounding lands. In the regional context of Occitania, these structures also reflect exchanges between religious communities and local populations, marked by a rural economy and limited trade networks.

No specific information is available on sponsors, initial construction dates, or specific historical events related to this site. The current data focus on its recent protection and association with other local monuments, such as the Galinières Bridge, suggesting architectural and functional coherence in the region.

The administrative location places Pierrefiche in the department of Aveyron, attached to the Occitanie region (formerly Midi-Pyrénées). This geographical setting, marked by varied terrain and streams like the Serre, has favoured the establishment of monastic barns, strategically positioned to exploit natural resources and facilitate travel.

The lack of details about the exact period of construction or historical occupants limits the fine understanding of this monument. However, his inscription in the title of Historical Monuments in 2024 highlights his heritage interest and the desire to preserve the physical traces of medieval monastic activities in Occitanie.
