Origin and history
The Musée Descartes is housed in René Descartes' home, a building partially built in the 16th century. Located in Descartes (formerly The Hague in Touraine), this place was transformed into a museum in 1974 to celebrate the memory of the philosopher. A renovation in 2005 modernized its scenography, making the exhibition more immersive and educational, while retaining original architectural elements such as the Renaissance facade.
The museum traces the life of René Descartes, born in 1596 in this house, and presents his work in the cultural context of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Among the remarkable pieces are a bust of the philosopher offered in 1802 by the Minister of the Interior, as well as ancient books belonging to him. The exhibition also covers the evolution of the city, renamed The Hague-Descartes in its honour, and places its legacy in the history of modern philosophy.
Ranked as Musée de France and associated with a Historic Monument, the site attracts visitors by its accessible approach and its anchoring in local history. However, the accuracy of its location remains poor (note 5/10), and its official address is 29 rue Descartes, in the Indre-et-Loire department. The museum highlights assets such as its collection of personal objects of the philosopher and a museumography adapted to all audiences.
