Origin and history
The two houses of Courpière, located in the heart of the medieval core of the city, illustrate an architecture mixing the 15th and 18th centuries. They form in return around a square courtyard, now covered with a glass window. The courtyard retains a walled staircase turret, while the interior reveals 18th-century panelling, painted canvases, and ground woodwork. These decorative elements, like the tops of painted doors, testify to the refinement of the modern era.
The house on garden, called the Monks, is sometimes presented as the old hospital of the city, although there is no evidence to confirm this tradition. The other house, the present presbytery, is an 18th century building acquired in 1911. Together, these buildings are part of a historical environment close to the church and the ancient priory of Benedictines, highlighting their central role in the local heritage.
The facades, roofs, the interior courtyard and the ground floor living room with its painted décor have been protected since 1988 by an inscription in the Historical Monuments. The property now belongs to an association. Their location, Place de la Cité, and their hybrid architecture make it a rare testimony to urban evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
The accuracy of their geographical location is considered fair (note 5/10), and their official address, 17 Place de la Cité, corresponds to the historical setting of Courpière, in Puy-de-Dôme. Available sources, such as Monumentum, highlight their heritage value, between medieval heritage and Enlightenment.
The absence of confirmation of the original function of the house of the Monks leaves a mystery, typical of ancient buildings whose use has evolved over the centuries. Their current state, combining defensive (tourelle) and decorative elements (woodlots), reflects the successive adaptations of a building with a vocation both religious, hospital and residential.
Finally, their openness to the public (visits, rentals, guest rooms) is not specified in the sources, but their status as a Historical Monument and their associative management suggest a potential cultural or tourist vocation, in line with the valorisation of the Auvergnat heritage.
