Two menhirs known as Pierres-Fittes : classification by list of 1889

Origin and history

Les Pierres-Fittes are two menhirs located in Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont, in the Vosges department (Grand Est region). These megaliths date from Neolithic, a period marked by the erection of stone monuments by the first sedentary agricultural societies. Today, one of the menhirs is about 1.20 m high, while the second, initially erect, is lying down beside him.

These menhirs were recognized early on for their heritage value, among the very first monuments listed in the 1889 list as historical monuments. Their official protection bears witness to the interest in preserving prehistoric remains in France since the 19th century. Their exact location, near Remiremont, remains approximate, with a cartographic accuracy considered "passible" (level 5/10).

Les Pierres-Fittes is owned and managed by the commune of Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont. Their present state — one standing, the other overturned — raises questions about the causes of their alteration (erosion, human activity, or climatic events). These menhirs are part of a wider set of megalithic sites in the Vosges, reflecting ancient human occupation and cultural practices related to worship or commemoration.
