Origin and history
The two tumuli of Arioulès de Churrine and the three tumuli of Campistrous, located in the commune of Campistrous (Hautes-Pyrénées), constitute a remarkable funeral complex. These monuments, erected between the Bronze Age and the First Iron Age, illustrate the sepulchral traditions of the protohistoric populations of the region. Their presence attests to an ancient and organized human occupation in this area of the central Pyrenees.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 1 July 1965, these tumuli enjoy legal protection which underlines their archaeological importance. Their location, although documented (8 Route de Lannemezan, 65300 Campistrous), remains approximate according to available sources, with a cartographic accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). The Merimée data specify their cadastre (Section D, Parcel 54), but no detailed search or study is mentioned in the sources consulted.
In the Bronze Age and the First Iron Age, tumuli were used as collective or individual burials, often associated with elites or community rites. In the Pyrenees, these funeral structures marked the landscape and played a symbolic role in the territorial organisation of human groups. Their construction reflected technical know-how (stone stacking, location selection) and beliefs related to the death and memory of ancestors.
