Origin and history
The Dolmen d'Alleuzet is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Ternes, in the department of Cantal, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from Neolithic, it bears witness to funeral and architectural practices of this distant era. This dolmen is distinguished by its partially preserved structure, with a covering slab of more than three meters long, still in place, supported by two side supports. It has no bedside slab, a notable feature among such monuments.
Ranked among the historical monuments since 1986, the Dolmen d'Alleuzet enjoys official protection that underscores its heritage importance. It is located in a wooded environment, adding to its mysterious and preserved character. The property of the monument belongs to the municipality of Ternes, and its present state allows to study the construction techniques and ritual uses of neolithic societies in this region.
Dolmens, such as that of Alleuzet, generally served as collective burials or places of worship for prehistoric communities. Their presence in the landscape reflects a complex social organization, characterized by spiritual beliefs and advanced mastery of stone size and transport techniques. In the Cantal, several megalithic sites attest to this ancient occupation, providing a valuable insight into the lives of the first farmers-breeders who settled in this mountainous area.
