Dolmen in the tumulus of the Bois-Bas (case A 336) : classification by list of 1889

Origin and history

The Dolmen des Bois-Bas de Minerve is a megalithic monument listed among the Historical Monuments since 1889. Located in the municipality of Minerve, in the department of Hérault (Occitanie region), it dates from Neolithic, a period marked by the emergence of collective funeral structures. This type of monument bears witness to the ritual and social practices of the sedentary communities of the time, which used dolmens as collective burials.

The tumulus, which includes the dolmen, is characteristic of the megalithic constructions of this period. These buildings were often located in strategic areas, such as plateaus or hills, and served as both a place of memory and a territorial marker. In Minerve, this site illustrates the importance of karst landscapes to neolithic populations, which found natural resources and shelter. The approximate location of the monument, indicated by GPS coordinates, suggests an isolated situation, typical of the necropolises of that time.

Ranked in 1889, the Dolmen des Bois-Bas enjoys early heritage protection, reflecting the historical and archaeological interest of these remains. The Merimée database, which lists Historic Monuments, indicates a location accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), without providing more details on its current accessibility or conservation status. Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected monument, not to mention any recent excavations or studies.
