Origin and history

The Dolmen de Bois-l'Évêque is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Sexey-aux-Forges, in the Grand Est region. This type of structure, characteristic of Neolithic, was generally used as a collective burial. Although its precise dating is not mentioned in the available sources, it is part of the tradition of prehistoric funeral constructions, often linked to the first sedentary and agricultural societies in the region.

Dolmens, like that of Bois-l'Évêque, were places of remembrance and worship for local communities. Their construction reflected a complex social organization capable of mobilizing significant resources and labour. In the Great East, as elsewhere in France, these monuments marked the landscape and played a strong symbolic role, often associated with religious beliefs or funeral rituals.
