Dolmen de Chiroux dit La Pierre-Levée et son tumulus (cad

Origin and history

The Dolmen de Chiroux, also known as Pierre-levée, is a megalithic building located in the commune of Plaisance, in the department of Vienna (New Aquitaine). It is distinguished by its structure of angevin type, characterized by a trapezoidal chamber bounded by five orthostats supporting a cover table of 6 meters long. All slabs, including the 40-metre-wide tumulus, are in breach, a local rock. No associated archaeological traces have been identified to date.

Ranked as historical monuments by order of 11 August 1986, this dolmen illustrates the neolithic funeral architecture of the region. Its location, at 190 meters altitude, suggests a deliberate choice for a particular visibility or symbolism. Excavations and studies carried out, such as those referred to in the Inventory of Megaliths of France (1996), have not revealed any furniture or objects that allow the precise date of its construction or use.

The protection of the site in 1986 underscores its heritage importance, although its history remains partially unknown. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as an emblematic monument to the megalithic sites of Vienna, without providing details of any rites or associated populations. Its state of conservation and its public access remain subject to local assessments, as evidenced by the cartographic accuracy deemed poor (note 5/10) on Monumentum.
