Dolmen de l'Aire-Aux-Martres (Case D 223): ranking by list of 1889

Origin and history

The Dolmen de l'Aire-aux-Martres, located in Parnac in the department of Indre (36), is a megalithic monument dating from the Neolithic period. This type of collective funeral structure reflects the ritual and social practices of prehistoric communities in the region. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1889, it illustrates the early heritage importance of these archaeological remains.

The location of the dolmen, near the place known as 5 Montgarnaud, remains approximate according to available sources, with a cartographic accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). This monument, protected under cadastral reference D 223, is part of a rural landscape marked by an ancient human occupation. Dolmens, typical of Neolithic, generally served as collective burials and reflected beliefs related to death and beyond.

The Centre-Val de Loire region, rich in prehistoric remains, is home to several similar sites. These monuments, often associated with alignments or tumulus, were places of memory for local populations. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the construction techniques and social organization of neolithic societies, although the details specific to this dolmen remain partially documented.
