Dolmen de la Bassetière I (Case ZN 18): entry by order of 26 December 1984

Origin and history

The Dolmen de la Bassetière I is a megalithic monument located in the municipality of Sillars, in the department of Vienna. This site, registered as a Historical Monument by order of 26 December 1984, is one of the prehistoric remains still visible in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its exact location remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as poor (level 5/10), according to the available data.

The dolmens, typical of Neolithic, were generally used as collective burials. The site of Bassetière I is part of a collection of funerary monuments scattered in the Poitou-Charentes, reflecting the cultural and religious practices of the agro-pastoral societies of the time. These stone structures often marked the landscape and played a strong symbolic role in the territorial organization of prehistoric communities.
