Origin and history

The Dolmen de La Lue, also known as the Dolmen de Lalue, is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Berneuil, in the Haute-Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It was written as a historical monument on 4 October 1982. Originally, the dolmen was in ruins before its official search in 1985, with a cover table broken in two parts, measuring 4.19 m x 3.50 m and 3.80 m x 1.78 m respectively. The remaining two supports are 1.34 m and 1.15 m long. The funeral chamber, probably piriform, lost its original tumulus, disappeared over time.

The 1985 excavations revealed limited archaeological material, disturbed by previous clandestine excavations. The artifacts discovered include a cross-edged arrow frame, four peduncle frames and fins, as well as ceramic coats decorated with incisions or digital prints. These objects, attributed to the Artenacian culture, do not correspond to the period of presumed construction of the dolmen, emphasizing a reuse or subsequent occupation of the site. Dolmen remains a rare testimony of Neolithic funeral and social practices in the region.

The site is referenced in several archaeological studies, notably those of Martial Imbert (1907) and Dominique Vuaillat (1988), which document the megalithism in Limousin. Although partially degraded, the Dolmen de La Lue offers a valuable overview of local megalithic constructions. Its location, in an area marked by a concentration of similar sites, reinforces its importance for understanding the Neolithic communities of Haute-Vienne.
