Le dolmen (Box B 650, placed Pech Grand): registration by order of 21 February 2012
Origin and history
The Dolmen de la Pierre Levée du Cloup Prioun, located in Sauliac-sur-Célé, is a megalithic monument dating back to the late Neolithic or Chalcolithic period. This site is distinguished by its partially preserved megalithic chamber, integrated in a cairn of 1.80 meters height and a diameter of sixteen meters. Several architectural elements, such as walls and excavations visible on the surface, testify to recent developments related to agro-pastoral activities (parcellar, gariot, etc.).
The dolmen was registered as a Historic Monument by order of 21 February 2012, thus protecting its integrity. Although its location is approximate (estimated at 5/10), it remains a remarkable example of the prehistoric funeral architecture of the region. The cairn and associated structures illustrate the social and economic practices of the local communities of the time, marked by livestock and agriculture.
Available data from Monumentum and the internal archives highlight the importance of this site in understanding the megalithic traditions of southwestern France. No information is provided on its current accessibility or tourist use, but its state of conservation makes it a privileged subject for archaeologists.
