Dolmen de Monteil (Box E 2228p): by order of 7 May 1945
Origin and history
The dolmen de Monteil, also known as the dolmen du Montheil, is an emblematic megalithic building located in the commune of Folles, in the Haute-Vienne department. This monument, typical of the Neolithic period, bears witness to the funeral and architectural practices of prehistoric societies in the region. It is located close to the hamlet of Montheil, in a preserved rural environment.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 7 May 1945, the Monteil dolmen enjoys official protection which underlines its heritage importance. This classification preserves this archaeological vestige, while providing researchers and the public with access to a heritage that is thousands of years old. The data available, notably via the Merimée database and sources such as Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected monument.
The Neolithic period, at which this dolmen was erected, corresponds to an era of profound social and technological transformations in New Aquitaine. Local communities, then settled, developed agricultural, artisanal and ritual practices, whose dolmens are a lasting testimony. These structures often served as collective burials, reflecting a community organization and beliefs related to death and beyond.
