Origin and history
The Dolmen de Pouzac 1, located in the commune of Roches-Prémarie-Andillé (Vienna department, New Aquitaine region), is an emblematic vestige of Neolithic. This funerary monument, still in place at the place called Pouzac, consists of a slab of limestone 4 meters long by 2.70 meters wide, resting on a pillar and an orthostat. It reflects the ritual and architectural practices of local prehistoric societies.
Mentioned for the first time by a drawing kept at the Municipal Library of Poitiers, the dolmen was cited in 1859 by Alphonse Le Touzé de Longuemar as part of a set of partially destroyed dolmens. Excavations revealed lithic artifacts (points of arrows, piercings, shrapnel), pottery fragments, trimmings (collar seeds, perforated animal teeth) and human remains, confirming its funeral and ritual use.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 10 March 1977, the Dolmen de Pouzac 1 is now protected for its archaeological value. Its state of conservation and the objects discovered on site offer valuable insight into the customs and crafts of the Neolithic communities of the region. The location of the site, although documented (approximate address: 8 Pouzac, 86340 Roches-Premarie-Andillé), remains of poor accuracy (level 5/10).
