Origin and history
The Dolmen de Saint-Léger-de-Montbrillais is a megalithic building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Vienna, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Dated from Neolithic, it illustrates the funeral and architectural practices of prehistoric societies of that time. This type of monument, consisting of large erect stones, generally served as a collective burial and marked the landscape in a sustainable manner.
Dolmens, such as that of Saint-Léger-de-Montbrillais, were places of memory and worship for Neolithic communities. Their construction reflected a complex social organization capable of mobilizing important human and technical resources. These monuments were often integrated into symbolic landscapes, linked to funeral rituals or spiritual beliefs.
Their preservation until today makes it possible to study the lifestyles and traditions of the ancient populations of the region.
