Origin and history

The Dolmen de la Pierre à Pineau is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Oiron in the Deux-Sèvres department of New Aquitaine. Data from Neolithic, it is characterized by an imposing slab of 3.80 m by 4 m, of a thickness ranging from 0.50 m to 0.95 m, resting on two small blocks forming a right angle. A second slab, smaller (3.25 m by 1.75 m), is visible at the rear. This contrast between the mass of the main slab and the fragility of its supports is one of its most striking architectural peculiarities.

The site was the subject of clandestine excavations, during which Ch. Hebras, a teacher at Moncontour, discovered significant artifacts: four pointes of flint flint arrows and ailerons, as well as tensions of a black paste caliciform vase decorated with vertical motifs in the form of a "bar d'Scale". These objects attest to the human occupation and cultural practices associated with this type of funerary monument during the Neolithic period.

The dolmen was listed as historic monuments by an order of 28 February 1979, thus recognizing its heritage value. This official protection underscores its archaeological and historical importance, while allowing its preservation for future generations. The bibliographical references, such as Georges Germond's Inventory of Megaliths of France (1980), confirm its integration into the regional megalithic landscape of the Deux-Sèvres.

The location of the dolmen, at the approximate address of 18 Rue de l'Abbé Bureau in Oiron, is documented in the Merimée base, although the accuracy of this location is considered poor (level 5 of 10). This monument is part of a wider network of megalithic sites in the region, reflecting the funeral and symbolic practices of New Aquitaine Neolithic societies.
