Dolmen dit d'Agarnel (cad. A 74): by order of 3 March 1959
Origin and history
The dolmen known as Agarnel, located in the municipality of Limogne-en-Quercy, is an emblematic vestige of the Neolithic period. This megalithic monument, typical of the funeral buildings of the time, illustrates the know-how of prehistoric societies in the work of stone. Its architecture, composed of large slabs, probably served as a collective burial, reflecting beliefs and rituals related to death during Neolithic.
The dolmen was officially recognized for its heritage importance by a classification order under the Historic Monuments dated 3 March 1959. This classification highlights its archaeological and historical value, while ensuring its protection against potential degradation. Although the precise details of its construction and use remain partially unknown, its current state allows us to study the construction techniques and social organization of the Neolithic communities in Quercy.
The location of the dolmen, in the Lot department in Occitanie, is part of a territory rich in prehistoric remains. The region, marked by an ancient human occupation, provides a framework for understanding Neolithic lifestyles and cultural practices. Dolmens, like Agarnel, play a key role in the study of the exchanges and funeral traditions of this pivotal period of prehistory.
