Origin and history

The Dolmen de la Pierre Laye is a megalithic monument located in Vauxrezis, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Data of Neolithic, it consists of a large cover table of 4 meters long by 2 meters wide, originally resting on seven orthostats. This funerary site, searched around 1850 by the archaeological society of Soissons, revealed bones corresponding to about twenty skeletons, as well as lithic objects within a radius of 40 to 130 meters around the dolmen.

The dolmen was discovered before 1841 by Dr.Godelle, then studied by Octave Vauvillé, who collected artifacts like a 141 mm unpolished axe. The cover table presents natural bowls or associated with attempts to drain by carrier. Ranked a historic monument in 1944, this dolmen illustrates the funeral practices and megalithic architecture of the Neolithic period in the region.

The excavations carried out in the 19th century allowed a better understanding of the spatial organization of the site, with a central burial chamber and lithic remains scattered around it. The Dolmen de la Pierre Laye is today an important testimony of the prehistoric heritage of Aisne, managed by the municipality of Vauxrezis and protected for its archaeological and historical value.
