Dolmen (Case CK 67): entry by order of 20 November 1995
Origin and history
The Dolmen du Mas d'Agard is a megalithic monument located in Fontvieille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Unlike other similar graves, it is located on the plain rather than on a rocky eminence. This dolmen, still unsearched, has been listed as historical monuments since 1995.
This type of structure, characteristic of megalithism, generally served as a collective burial for neolithic or protohistoric populations. Dolmens were often places of memory and worship for local communities, reflecting a social and religious organization structured around the dead. Their presence in Provence bears witness to an ancient and lasting occupation of this territory.
The inscription of the Dolmen du Mas d'Agard in 1995 underlines its heritage and archaeological importance. Although little documented, this site provides material testimony of funeral practices and beliefs of prehistoric societies in the region. Its atypical location on the plain could indicate specific symbolic or practical choices, still poorly understood in the absence of thorough excavations.
