Dolmen dit Peyre de Cabusso Ludo (Case E 134): ranking by list of 1889
Origin and history
The dolmen known as Peyre de Cabusso Ludo is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Campestre-et-Luc in the Gard department. Dated from Neolithic, it illustrates the collective funeral structures typical of this period, marked by the use of large erect stones. This type of structure generally served as a burial place for local communities, reflecting their beliefs and social organization around the deceased.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments since 1889, this dolmen is one of the first prehistoric protected sites in France. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10), but its administrative address is officially recorded under Cadastre E 134. No additional information is available on its current condition, accessibility or possible archaeological excavations.
The region of Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie), where Campestre-et-Luc is located, was in the Neolithic a territory marked by increasing sedentarization, nascent agriculture and breeding. Dolmens, such as Peyre de Cabusso Ludo, played a central role in the landscape, serving both as territorial markers and as places of memory for populations. Their construction required Community cooperation, stressing the importance of social structures organised from that time on.
