Origin and history
Le dolmen du Bardon, also known as Pierre Chabrée, is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Coltines, in the department of Cantal, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This dolmen is distinguished from other similar monuments of the region by its atypical location: it is indeed the only dolmen of the Cantal not to have been erected in an open place, but at the bottom of a valley. Its structure consists of two orthostats (dressed stones), a bedside slab and a cover table, characteristic of the megalithic constructions of the Neolithic.
The Dolmen du Bardon was listed as a historic monument on 11 February 1986, recognizing its heritage importance. According to the sources, a human tooth was discovered on the site, although this information remains to be confirmed by extensive archaeological studies. This monument is cited in specialized works, such as the Directory preliminary to an inventory of the megalithic monuments of Auvergne (1973) and the book Dolmens et menhirs de France (2014), which help document its history and architectural peculiarities.
The precise location of the dolmen is indicated as being at Coltines, with a geographical accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10). The site is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 15053, attached to the department of Cantal and to the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Although the practical information on his visit is not detailed in the sources, his status as a historical monument makes him a protected site and potentially accessible to the public, subject to the regulations in force.
